What Is LPG Heating? A Plain-English Guide for Off-Grid Homes

What is LPG heating?

LPG heating uses liquefied petroleum gas — usually propane — stored in a tank or cylinders at your property to fuel a boiler, and often a cooker or gas fire too. It works much like mains gas central heating, with one difference: the fuel is delivered and stored on site rather than piped to the house.

For UK homes with no mains gas connection, it is one of the main ways to run a conventional wet central heating system with radiators and hot water.

How LPG heating works

The chain is short and easy to picture. Gas is stored as a liquid under moderate pressure in a bulk tank or in cylinders. A regulator reduces the pressure and turns it into the gas supply the appliance needs. From there it reaches your boiler, which heats water for radiators and taps exactly as a mains gas boiler does.

Day to day, an LPG system feels no different to live with. The heating comes on, the radiators warm up and the hot water runs. The practical difference is that you are responsible for the fuel: bulk tanks are topped up by tanker, and cylinders are swapped over as they empty.

What does LPG stand for?

LPG stands for liquefied petroleum gas. It describes propane and butane, gases that turn to liquid under modest pressure — which is what makes them practical to store in a tank or bottle. Home heating in the UK almost always uses propane, as it performs better in cold weather.

The heating itself behaves the same way. What differs is the supply, the storage and who is qualified to work on it.

Is LPG heating right for your home?

Honest answer: if mains gas is available at your property, that is usually the simpler option — nothing to store, nothing to order. LPG comes into its own where mains gas does not reach, which covers a great deal of rural Suffolk and Norfolk.

Where it earns its place, it earns it well. LPG gives you a proper wet central heating system with radiators, responsive heat and instant hot water, on the same familiar controls as a mains gas home — something not every off-grid alternative manages.

Looking after an LPG system

An LPG boiler needs an annual service just as a mains gas boiler does, with the added check of the tank or cylinder connections, hoses, changeover valves and regulator. It keeps the system safe, keeps fuel use down and satisfies most manufacturers’ warranty conditions.

One important point: LPG appliances must be worked on by a Gas Safe registered engineer who holds the LPG qualification on their registration. A natural gas qualification alone does not cover it, and you can check any engineer’s registration at gassaferegister.co.uk.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

An LPG boiler is a central heating boiler that runs on liquefied petroleum gas stored in a tank or cylinders at the property, rather than on mains gas. It heats radiators and hot water in exactly the same way — only the fuel supply is different.
